Facts about flexitarianism

Flexitarianism describes a way of eating that allows you to be a flexible vegetarian.

A flexitarian is a person who eats mostly plant-based foods, but also eats meat every now and then.

There are different types of vegetarian eating styles:

  • Vegan: only plant-based foods are eaten
  • Lacto-vegetarian: dairy products are eaten along with plant-based foods
  • Lacto-ovo vegetarian: eggs and dairy products are eaten along with plant-based foods
  • Pesco-vegetarian: fish is eaten along with plant-based foods

Compared to non-vegetarians, vegetarians tend to have:

  • Lower risk of dying from heart disease
  • Lower rates of type 2 diabete and hypertension
  • Lower LDL (low density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels
  • Lower blood pressure
  • A healthy weight
  • A diet with less saturated fat and cholesterol
  • A diet with more fruits, vegetables, soy, whole grains and fibre

The principles of a flexitarian eating style echo the advice of Canada’s Food Guide to choose lower fat cheese, enjoy fish, and eat beans and tofu more often.

Flexitarian eating can benefit everyone – from children to even the most meat-loving members of your family!
